Doing it BIG in Nelspruit!

Last week Robert Gumede , IT millionaire mogul, celebrated his 50th birthday in style. The business tycoon billionaire mogul from Nelspruit, Mpumalanga in South Africa made headlines across the country for flying Rick Ross “Hottest MC in the Game” and R&B star Keith Sweat. It had people “HUH!” singing in anticipation throughout the party. The party also featured top South African artists like Khuli Chana, AKA, Zahara, Mafikizolo, Zakes Bantwini and Dr Malinga.

Media in events

That was quiet a smart PR technique, now who doesn’t know who he is? Great media publicity was carried out. The media covered quiet well. His reputation and extravagant way of life made it newsworthy for the media to cover it. He supplied the audiences with other celebrities.
After Robert received publicity for, Gumede wins R53m in UK court battle - City Press.

Tips on getting the media to cover your event.

1. To get the media to cover your event, you need to have something newsworthy.

2. Be “it” a cool deejay or a celebrity deejay or be “it” a super awesome performance that has goes along with the event the organization is planning.

3. Get the media engaged to cover the event.

4. Notify the media by sending out a media release and basically the media release is the 5W+1H (Who,Why,Why,What,Where and How).

5. Get other celebrity guests in the room.

    1. @Esther, when working with people, nothing is ever guaranteed. When you plan a special event, the best thing you can do is get an artist that goes along with your organisation . That will increase your chances to media coverage.

    2. if i may add to what toka said..it is very important to know what the people are talking about and where they are doing it right?well,we all know that celebrities such as lil wayne, drake, rick ross etc are mostly talked about everywhere.you have to be strategic, dont just bring in "pitch black afro" i mean many people even forgot about him..its all about what sells at the end of the day

  2. Event coordinators do not understand the importance of PR ,you can invite a super well known celebs like Rick Ross but you don't brand your event people wont even know about it. What Robert Gumede did was excellent his PR people are very good ,they didn't just brand him and Rick Ross but they branded the event

  3. @Nhlanhla,that's one of the mistakes events coordinators do.I totally agree with you.

  4. Ahh well he is the biggest star of all time and he does have many but im nt a fan.The fact that people know him who wouldnt want to go to his event he is a big brandm

  5. The media just cnt resist us celebs, so guys dnt forget to invite me

  6. if a celebrity is going to a certain event the press and the public are the first to know about it,even though you haven't invited the press and the public on your event, because the celebrity's lives involves the public in it. So whatever they do the public is alert already, they have no secret life. It will be a great thing also to have a celebrity at your gig, party or any event you going to do, at the end of the day its either you or the place you have, its going to be well known. As the guy Robert Gumede

  9. good pr strategy for him hey..no one will ever forget it,getting a well known person to get publicity

  10. I agree with you, the media wants newsworthy stories, if you come up with something that is not newsworthy, the media will not consider you because they deal with newsworthy information.

    1. Yes, give the media a good reason to cover your event. And get great publicity

  11. I think it was a waste of valuable funds for Gumede to bring in already established billionaires just for a one night party. Does he not know of any charity closest to him that he could have donated a simple R100 000. 00? am sure theres plenty of them around Nelspruit....My thoughts

    1. i guess giving money to a charity would have been a good thing for him but he decided to celebrate his birthday with his people,it may have been his strategy because giving back to the community doesn't only mean giving money but any form that will generate good publicity and on this case he got it.in many occasions billionares take their friends and families to expensive trips and booze to come nice..what robert did shows ubuntu and appreciation for his people

  12. It is for what toka said that for media to cover your event you must have an interesting story.Media like hard news that will create publicity and sell their product to their target audience.Media like news that will curiosity to read their story.

  13. i strongly agree with you on Tips on getting the press to cover your event, it's of huge importance to have something that is worth looking it, something of human interest for exaple, because nothing iritates publicists more than being pitched on a story which they clearly have no interest

    1. I agree with you, there totally has to be a press worthy element

  14. It is always advisable for one to always check on the newsworthy angle of an event before getting press to cover his/her event.People usually go an extra mile just to get themselves known as Robert did, he will be known by bringing celebrities to his birthday celebration but that is not of benefit to the people who attended the event it was just for his publicity after all.

    1. I agree with you on the newsworthy element but the whole point was for him to be known which at the of the day happened

  15. I have to agree with Jacky on this one, many other things should be considered before hoping to get press coverage, considering the target publics. Rick Ross at a 50th birthday party was a proper stunt but not int the correct context.

    Replies
    1. Yes that too should have been taken into account

  16. That was a good Pr stunt, well done

    ReplyDelete
  17. That was smart of him, he used well know musicians to promote him while promoting them. He is a real musician and must consider doing PR as a hobby.

    ReplyDelete
  18. true. PR will always sta winning Gumede is a smart man and it eorked in his favour thanks to his excellent Pr team

    ReplyDelete
  19. i agree that it was a good publicity.in PR publicity is generated, strategies on creating publicity for individuals or brands need to be generated

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wow the guy is smart hey; good publicity comes with spending big bucks. It is no doubt that when you are backed by the best PR team/firm nothing will go wrong. Great tips you have there, especially the first one, without that something "newsworthy" you are totally a void.

  21. Lol this is a proper PR stunt hey and i think a bit of showing off. This man could've just included more local stars instead of shipping in a huge *literally* international act. But then again he his famous for showing off his bucks, a couple of years ago his daughter was getting married and it was a huge specticle

  22. I think in today’s world when you do not have a well know person at your event then do not expect people to come in numbers because we all celebrity wanna be’s so we want to associate ourselves with them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Your right, you don't actually have to be well known. But because of that, at the end of the day..he ended up being well known for going big on his events.

  23. Well I think for an event to be successful one needs a well known celebrity and that was a well planned one but he could have done something better with the money.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have to agree with you, that publicity was received due to the celebrities that were invited. To me it looks as if the party itself was meant to create publicity for the host rather than be a birthday celebration.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you. Just imagine your birthday celebration making headlines across the country. Like how awesome is that? Talk about an excellent PR stunt

  25. Clearly Mr Gumede knows his story and he has a great pR team.Atleast people did not have to pay for anything for this event.

    1. You know! Like who gets to see Rick Ross performing for mahala

  26. first let me highlight the fact that I didn't know who Robert Gumede was or who was behind Rick Ross & Keith Sweat's visit to SA, so I would like to think that this was a good PR strategy because for one people know who he is ( Robert Gumede) is and now people have a level of respect for him and his connections in higher places. Now more business people will want to associate themselves with him.

    ReplyDelete
  27. that was a very brilliant pr campaign i must say, the people of nelspruit were lucky, i wish i lived in that community myself, and aparently the millionaire got a private jet as a birthday gift from his wife how cool is that

    ReplyDelete
  28. aaaaaaah that was excellent for his brand, obviously inviting public figures to your event surely means the media will be there by fire by force, invited or not........so i pr cordinators should certainly learn from that invite

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, they actually should learn a thing or two

  29. Mm this old man got mad paper yong o.O never mind his connections. Now that's a top notch move by Mr Gumede

    ReplyDelete
  30. True that. PRP had made Gumede to be reckoned and he got a good publicity with the stunt he had done.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You hit the nail right on the head!!! I was actually saying the samething about Robert Gumede, he's now more popular than some South African artists great PR strategy indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Great PR strategy indeed, Imean who doesn't dig Rick Ross! Ricky Rosey is the boss.. so haters chill

    ReplyDelete
  33. But in this case this 50 year old man is a man with a lot of money. Can you get the media behind you if you have no money? What kind of newsworthy things is the media interested in?
